Shinhan Donghae Open was started by Korean amateur golfers living in Japan in 1981 who had hopes of popularizing golf in Korea and thus contribute to the development of sports for all in Korea. It has since grown and developed into a major tournament with the highest authority in Korea. The tournament has played a very important role in the development of golf in Korea by raising popular interest in the game and creating an environment whereby Korean players can continuously improve their skills.
